How to Password Protect a PDF File

In an age where data breaches and privacy leaks are common, protecting sensitive information is no longer optional—it is a necessity. If you are sending bank statements, medical records, or confidential legal agreements via email, you must ensure that only the intended recipient can open and read the file. Our Protect PDF tool allows you to easily add robust encryption and a strong password to your PDF document in just a few clicks.

What Kind of Encryption Do We Use?

When you use our tool to lock your PDF, we don't just add a superficial lock. We apply industry-standard 128-bit or 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) encryption to the file. This mathematically scrambles the contents of the document so that it is completely illegible to anyone who does not possess the correct password. Even if a hacker intercepts your email, the document remains entirely secure.

Tips for Choosing a Strong Password

  • Length over Complexity: A password like "PurpleElephantDancing123!" is much harder for computers to crack than a short, complex one like "Xq9$p". Aim for at least 12 characters.
  • Do not use personal info: Avoid using your name, birthdate, or company name as the password.
  • Secure Sharing: Never send the password in the same email as the protected PDF. Send the document via email, and text the password to the recipient via a secure messaging app like WhatsApp or Signal.

Privacy and File Deletion

Because this tool is used for highly sensitive documents, we want to reiterate our strict privacy policy. Your file is uploaded via a secure connection. The encryption happens in isolated server memory. We do not store your password, and we do not store your file. Exactly 60 minutes after you upload your document, both the original and encrypted versions are permanently destroyed from our servers. You maintain 100% control over your data.
